Amazing Grace- check out the movie

Last night was the our last community group meeting. Community group is kinda what we call our small groups but it’s so much more than that, it’s our community. We not only study the Bible together but we talk about our lives, pray for one another, and eat together. I think eating together, even though it’s such a simple act, is very essential. One because it allows us to be able to talk more casually about life and whatever’s on our mind. It allows us to free ourselves from whatever might have been holding us back in a Bible study mindset.

But enough of that – so last night – last community group meeting of the semester – we decided to chill and watch a movie while eating food.  We ordered pizza and watched the movie AMAZING GRACE, it came out about three years ago I believe and it’s about the life of William Wilberforce, the British Abolitionist who fought his entire life for the freedom of slaves in Britain, resulting in the Slave Trade Act of 1807 which abolished the slave trade, which led to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which abolished slavery in all of the British empire. The last of the slaves in the United States were freed in 1865, why not sooner, like in Britain?

I really love that movie because of several reasons

1) he was going through the obstacle of whether to A) go into missionary work or B) continue in politics. In the end, he was shown that he would be able to sing God’s praise through his work! Thinking about this has definitely led me to thinking more about my career plans. Do what I’m passionate about and do it for the Glory of God!

2) It was clearly seen just his passion for seeing the slaves freed! Not only that but he was haunted by visions, images, and nightmares of slaves in chains. It made me want to see that kind of passion in myself.

3) He clearly wanted to see God’s kingdom now on earth!

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, i urge you to watch it. I have several other things on my mind from this movie and will be typing this up also. I plan on reading his works over the winter break and hopefully everything i can get my hands on.

For His Glory,

Will Poon
