It’s Not About Me, It’s All About God!

This past Spring Break, I had the opportunity to lead a group of 24 students to NYC for a Missions Trip. I have a hard time calling it a missions trip. If anything, I really see it as a learning experience and vision trip for the students and our ministry. We partnered with Hope Church NYC through Pastor Drew Hyun, who spoke for Cru’s Upstate Fall Getaway 3 years ago.

Though it was simply returning home for me, I got to bring 24 students and show them a different side of what they see on TV and whatever they can imagine with their minds. New York City is a beautiful city with millions of people who know how to hustle, live life, and need a deep intimate relationship with the God of the universe.

Throughout the week, through the sermons we heard, the work that we did, and conversations had, there was a subtle, yet beautifully resounding theme of:

It’s Not About Me, It’s All About God!

The reality of the foundation of life, and especially of the Christian walk, is simply that. It was never about me. God didn’t create the universe for me. God doesn’t exist for me. It was always and still is all about God. And it’s amazing!

In the first chapter of the book of John, it sets everything off on the right tone. In the beginning was not the earth or humans but God himself! It continues to blow my mind that everything we see around us was made through God. In Jesus there is life, and this life is the light of all mankind. Jesus is the hope of all humans!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4 ESV)

Later on in the same chapter, John the Baptists proclaims to everyone around him that he is not here to baptize people for his own sake, but his whole purpose in life is to let people know about Jesus!

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” (John 1:29-31 ESV)

In chapter 3, John is confronted by people who are wondering if he’s alarmed by the fact that people were leaving him to follow Jesus. John is so on point when he continues to simply say that it was never about him, but always about the King and Bridegroom coming for his beautiful Bride! We can be a part of this by following in John’s footsteps when he says:

He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30 ESV)

Friends, Christ must increase, and we decrease. Let us celebrate in this together!
