So one thing that God’s really been emphasizing to me this year is about His sovereignty. It’s a pretty big concept but one that needs understanding if we are to have a right mindset about the gospel and about the things that God does. His first priority is His glory and everything comes out of that, even us and our lives. With that is understanding as well that we are not here on this earth to figure out what we want for ourselves, but how we can live the lives that God has prepared for us. How can we listen closely and carefully to Him so that we may know and heed His instructions. I love Oswald Chambers’ thoughts on it from today’s devotional.
We have to get into the habit of carefully listening to God about everything, forming the habit of finding out what He says and heeding it. If, when a crisis comes, we instinctively turn to God, we will know that the habit has been formed in us. We have to take the initiative where we are, not where we have not yet been.
– Oswald Chambers
God calls us to listen and heed his calling where we are, not where we have not yet been. That’s very key. A lot of people will say, no, I can’t do that, I’m not ready yet. God knows exactly where we are in our faith and exactly where we are spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and doesn’t give us things that we can’t handle, especially without Him. He puts challenges in our lives so that we can see that we can’t do it, and turn to Him, so that we may put our trust and strength in Him to carry us through. Everything God puts in our lives is not about us, it’s about how He uses it to bring us back to Him. Which is why I love reading Psalms right now, because it’s so key to life. No matter what troubles we go through, God’s steadfast love is here to give us hope and life.
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
(Psalm 62:5-8 ESV)
Trust in Him. Listen and Heed.
